Who is Vulnerable?
Vulnerability Description Microsoft Excel is a spreadsheet application released by the Microsoft Corporation. Its native file format is the Binary Interchange File Format (BIFF), which is available is several versions. An Excel file contains information about the various spreadsheets that form an Excel workbook, the data and macros that populate spreadsheet cells, and so on. The commonly used file extension of Excel file is xls. A heap corruption vulnerability has been identified in Microsoft Excel. The vulnerability is due to an error in Microsoft Office Excel that fails to properly parse the Excel spreadsheet file format. A remote attacker could trigger this flaw by convincing a victim to open a specially crafted Excel spreadsheet file that includes a malformed RealTimeData record. Successful exploitation of this issue may allow execution of arbitrary code on a vulnerable system.

This protection will detect and block attempts to exploit this vulnerability.

In order for the protection to be activated, update your Security Gateway product to the latest IPS update. For information on how to update IPS, go to SBP-2006-05, click on Protection tab and select the version of your choice.

Security Gateway R80 / R77 / R75

  1. In the IPS tab, click Protections and find the Microsoft Excel RealTimeData Record Heap Corruption (MS10-038) - Ver2 protection using the Search tool and Edit the protection's settings.
  2. Install policy on all Security Gateways.
