Vulnerability Description An XML external entities vulnerability exists in Machine Learning's find_file_structure API. If a policy allowing external network access has been added to Elasticsearch's Java Security Manager then an attacker could send a specially crafted request capable of leaking content of local files on the Elasticsearch node. This could allow a user to access information that they should not have access to. A successful exploitation of this vulnerability could result in the disclosure of file contents from the target system.

This protection detects attempts to exploit this vulnerability.

In order for the protection to be activated, update your Security Gateway product to the latest IPS update. For information on how to update IPS, go to SBP-2006-05, click on Protection tab and select the version of your choice.

Security Gateway R80 / R77 / R75

  1. In the IPS tab, click Protections and find the Elasticsearch MachineLearning XML External Entities (CVE-2018-17247) protection using the Search tool and Edit the protection's settings.
  2. Install policy on all Security Gateways.
