3MOBILE SECURITY BUYER’S GUIDE

Introduction: the mobile security challenge There are 7.4 billion mobile users worldwide, spending over six hours a day on their phones—browsing the web, accessing around 10 apps daily, and sharing photos and videos.

This widespread use puts mobile devices at significant risk of cyberattacks, with the threat only escalating due to the proliferation of malicious apps in app stores, the rise of insecure messaging platforms, and cyber criminals continually launching phishing attacks that target mobile-specific vulnerabilities.

Since any internet-connected mobile device is susceptible to attack, securing the mobile fleet for today’s always-connected workforce is crucial. A breach of just one employee device can put the entire organization at risk. Moreover, with new sophisticated threats emerging, adding to the existing challenges in mobile protection, the need for robust mobile security has never been greater.

In 2023, the number of attacks on mobile devices reached almost 33.8 million, marking a 50% increase from the previous year’s figures. (Kapersky)

4MOBILE SECURITY BUYER’S GUIDE

The new challenges that organizations are facing include:

• A threat landscape that is broader than ever • The AI revolution with the mass availability and accessibility of generative AI as the cybercriminal’s

weapon of choice • The introduction of new types of attacks that are increasingly difficult to prevent, detect, and uproot

Incumbent hurdles that continue to stand in the way of mobile protection include:

• The limitations of UEMs/MDMs in meeting the mobile protection challenge • Misconceptions about mobile security • Privacy concerns and finding the balance between security, privacy, and end-user trust

The generative AI revolution The introduction and mass accessibility of generative AI (genAI) tools is accelerating productivity in organizations. But it is also making the creation and proliferation of malware very easy even for entrant cybercriminals.

Without any coding or social engineering skills required, genAI facilitates the fast and easy creation of malicious code and text for phishing emails.

Hackers are also leveraging the technology to automate attacks, evade cybersecurity defenses, and even create malware that mutates in real time.

Unfortunately, generative AI remains largely unregulated. While some platforms have built-in safety barriers, makers of such tools have been slow to address the issue.

For example, a Check Point Research report found that Google’s generative AI chatbot, Gemini (former- ly known as Bard), had limited restrictions on creating phishing emails. With minimal manipulations, it could also be used to develop malware keyloggers, posing significant security concerns.

The introduction of new types of attacks Nation-level spyware In addition to older models of spyware, which continue to grow and proliferate, nation-level spyware and modified applications are among a crop of new and more sophisticated types of mobile spyware that are increasingly difficult to prevent, detect, and uproot.

Nation-level spyware refers to spyware that is often developed for high-level government clients and attacks targets in the government and civil sector, such as Pegasus, Predator and Stalkerware.

In 2024, China targeted phones of Trump, Vance and Harris campaign affiliates to exfiltrate data. NBC News

Nation-level spyware methodologies have also trickled down into non-governmental hands. This is particularly true of stalkerware, with more than 1,000 apps currently out there designed to stalk users by accessing a device’s camera, microphone, location, and more, without consent.

Modified applications These are applications that disguise themselves as legitimate apps. Without realizing it, users down- load and install them, enabling threat actors to steal data, track location, access cameras and micro- phones, collect contacts, and spread malware.

Smishing This is a form of phishing that targets mobile devices. But, instead of sending phishing content over email, smishers use SMS or MMS text messages to deliver their messages.

QR phishing Also known as Quishing, QR phishing is essentially a form of a phishing attack that cleverly uses QR codes to trick users into visiting malicious websites. When a user scans a malicious QR code, their browser goes to the website indicated by the QR code.

The limitations of UEMs/MDMs Unified Endpoint Management tools (UEMs) and Mobile Device Management tools (MDMs) are import- ant for efficient mobile fleet management, but they are not security tools.

Among the reasons they cannot provide protection against cyberthreats are:

• OS patch and update deployments are often error-prone • Employees tend to be reluctant to restart their device to launch new protections • The number of data points about a device is limited, restricting visibility

Ultimately, organizations that rely solely on UEMs/MDMs to secure employee mobile devices are left vulnerable to attacks.

6MOBILE SECURITY BUYER’S GUIDE

Misconceptions about mobile security In addition to believing that UEMs/MDMs provide robust security, there is another wide-spread miscon- ception that leaves the organization exposed to threats.

Namely, while VPNs and endpoint protection solutions are important components of the security stack, they lack the capabilities required for safeguarding corporate assets against mobile compromises.

55% of professionals consider smartphones to be amongst their most vulnerable endpoints.

Privacy concerns and finding the balance between security, privacy, and end-user trust Organizations often struggle to balance securing employee mobile devices with protecting personal and payment data. As a result, mobile security is frequently sacrificed in favor of nurturing end-user trust.

Moreover, since mobile security is often perceived as disruptive to productivity, controls can be lax to avoid slowing down work.

Unfortunately, the perception that mobile security must be compromised to ensure trust and productivi- ty leaves organizations highly vulnerable to attacks.

45% of employees don’t change their passwords, even after a data breach.

The threat landscape is broader than ever Mobile device and app use continues to grow at exponential rates. Mobile app downloads reached 257 billion during 2023, and the smartphone user base is estimated to reach 6.4 billion by 2029.

This means that the attack surface is wider than ever and constantly exponentially increasing, with more devices and apps in use creating more points of vulnerability that can be exploited, for:

• Launching attacks • Compromising security • Gaining unauthorized access to Personal and corporate sensitive data and resources

7MOBILE SECURITY BUYER’S GUIDE

With employees spending more time than ever on their mobile phones, accessing vulnerable apps, sites, and contents, and with formidable new and incumbent threats continuing to spread, it is the mandate of every organization to put in place powerful mobile fleet protection.

This paper presents the five principles for selecting the optimal solution for maintaining comprehensive safeguards.

5 principles for selecting the optimal mobile security solution Principle #1: Prevention first A prevention-first approach involves implementing protective measures that block attacks before they reach users. This approach is much more effective than relying on detection alone, as it enables the organization to avoid the disruptions and damages that occur when an attack is successful.

Questions to ask when evaluating the solution’s ability to block attacks before they reach users:

• Can it block all types of malicious files, including those that can be downloaded through QR codes, such as PDFs, APKs, WORD, and others?

• Can it block zero day threats such as zero phishing and unknown files? • Can it detect and block devices that are vulnerable due to misconfiguration and OS CVEs? • Can it block infected devices from accessing corporate assets and resources? • Can it recognize and block advanced jailbreaking and rooting techniques? • Can it force an upgrade to the latest OS version which is immune to a specific vulnerability?

The growing abuse of QR codes in malware and payment scams prompted a recent FTC warning:

“ Scammers hide harmful links in QR codes to steal your information.”

Principle #2: Multi-layered protection Every threat actor follows a unique attack progression. To counter this, it is essential to implement multi-layered protection that blocks attackers from breaching the network and accessing the organiza- tion’s assets, no matter the attack vector or stage in the attack lifecycle

Questions to ask when evaluating the solution’s ability to stop attacks as soon as possible:

• Can it scan apps from any source, including official app stores? • Can it detect, evaluate, and block risky apps both man-made and those created by a generative AI,

before they reach the device?

8MOBILE SECURITY BUYER’S GUIDE

• Can it block communication to malicious internet sources, as based on the URL domain or IP address?

• Can it make sure that communication between a malicious app and its C&C server will be blocked and reported to both end-users and security admins?

• Can it protect all the vectors of attack in mobile, including, device, application, network, and files? • Does it offer a broad range of network security, including safe browsing, conditional access, and

protected DNS?

“ DDos attacks also increasingly target applications directly. Successful and cost-effective defense against this type of threat therefore requires a multilayered approach.” Gartner

Principle #3: Easy deployment The mobile security solution should seamlessly integrate with all the market-leading mobile manage- ment and unified endpoint management solutions, enabling users to easily adopt it and administrators to deploy and scale with speed.

Questions to ask when evaluating ease of deployment, management, and scalability?

• Does it easily integrate with other security tools, such as SIEM or threat intelligence? • Does it have one-click, fully automated integration? • Does it have zero touch deployment that doesn’t require user intervention? • Does it have on-device, single click, zero interaction employee device installation? • Does it have an AI copilot for automated policy and dashboard configuration? • Does it support any device-ownership program (BYOD, COPE) and device work settings?

80% of survey respondents say integration challenges are slowing their efforts. Salesforce.com survey

9MOBILE SECURITY BUYER’S GUIDE

Principle #4: End-user transparency One of the key challenges of mobile security deployment is user acceptance.

Introducing interruptions to an employee’s mobile user experience due to background activity of the mobile security solution will hinder performance and cooperation.

For effective mobile fleet protection, the solution should bring no impact on device usability, browsing experience, battery life, or data consumption.

Questions to ask about the solution’s potential impact on the user experience:

• Can it deploy without user intervention? • Does it affect the device’s battery life and data consumption? • Can it ensure safe and disruption-free web browsing and file sharing? • Can it scale effectively across all users and all their devices, without interfering with

normal device use? • Can the solution detect threats without impacting device performance?

“ 90% of C-suite executives believe their company pays attention to people’s needs when introducing new technology, but only about half (53%) of staff say the same.” PWC

Principle #5: Privacy by design The strictest standards of employee privacy must always be guaranteed. IT admins should never be ex- posed to personal data and usage or browsing behaviors, unless sites visited or apps downloaded have been deemed to be risky or malicious and pose a security threat to corporate assets.

• Questions to ask when evaluating the solution’s privacy protection capabilities: • Does it comply with GDPR privacy standards? • Can the solution work without storing user personal information in the cloud? • Does it collect only device metadata? • Can it prevent IT admins from seeing which apps users have downloaded and websites they visit? • Does the solution anonymize the data it uses for analysis?
