A New Operating Reality for the Data Center

The data center remains home to some of an organization’s most sensitive systems, applications, and data. What moves through it, though, has changed considerably.

Traffic can spike without warning, applications communicate constantly across the environment, cloud services connect back into on-premises systems, and now AI applications and agents are beginning to operate alongside traditional workloads. For organizations modernizing for AI, that can also mean introducing dedicated AI infrastructure and AI servers alongside the systems already in place. Through all of this evolution and change, the expectation remains the same: stay fast, stay available, stay secure.

Attackers know how valuable these environments are. New malware and exploits can move quickly, while compromised workloads can create paths deeper into the environment if east-west traffic is left insufficiently protected.

AI adds another pressure point. 29% of organizations are already moving AI training and inference workloads into on-premises or private-cloud environments, with another 49% planning or considering it. Yet while 76% call data center perimeter security critical for AI workloads, only 35% say their current environment is fully or mostly capable of securing them.

Security Needs to Be Ready for the Spike

Capacity planning gets difficult when demand refuses to stay predictable.

A seasonal rush, an acquisition, a new application, a large backup, or an AI workload can quickly change throughput requirements. Overbuilding years ahead wastes resources, but waiting until the firewall becomes the bottleneck carries its own risk.

Security capacity needs room to grow with the environment. A scalable architecture can distribute traffic and security processing across multiple gateways, allowing organizations to add capacity as demand rises without redesigning everything around it.

Availability has to hold up at the same time. Business continuity, shared- state redundancy, session continuity, geographic clustering, and site failover can help keep connections protected through hardware failures, maintenance, and other disruptions. Security updates should also be possible without taking protection offline.

Strong perimeter protection still matters. A lot.

New malware, phishing campaigns, and vulnerability exploits can emerge and spread quickly. Effective threat prevention has to identify those threats early enough to stop them before they become an internal problem. Ongoing self-exposure testing against leading frontier AI models can help uncover security gaps proactively before threat actors find them. But getting past the perimeter is only one way an attack becomes dangerous. Once a workload, account, or system is compromised, east-west traffic can give an attacker room to move through the environment. That makes segmentation another important part of the data center security model.

Macrosegmentation can separate major security zones and application groups. Microsegmentation goes further, limiting communication among individual hosts and workloads. Used together, those layers reduce unnecessary paths through the environment and help contain an attack if something does get compromised.

The Threats Aren’t Always Coming Through the Front Door

Check Point Firewall offers layered protection that reduces the number of paths an attacker can use to move deeper into the data center.

AI is Already Finding Its Way Inside

Some organizations are building private LLM infrastructure. Many more are simply adding AI to the applications and workflows they already run.

Both create new security questions.

An AI application can receive malicious prompts, expose sensitive information, or produce harmful outputs. Autonomous agents go further. They can interact with APIs and other systems, use tools, and take actions without waiting for a person at every step.

For organizations hosting AI-powered applications on premises, application security now has to understand the AI interaction itself.

AI Runtime Protection can be integrated with Check Point WAF to provide AI-native application security for chatbots, AI assistants, autonomous agents, and other AI-powered experiences, protecting them against threats and sensitive-data exposure without requiring model retraining.

Protect AI Where the Interactions are Happening

Running AI infrastructure in your own data center adds more than models and GPUs to the security equation. The environment now includes GPU servers, containers, inference services, and LLM endpoints alongside the applications and network infrastructure that’s already being protected. Now security has to protect both the AI interactions themselves and the infrastructure that makes them possible.

For organizations building these environments, that can mean:

• Protecting the host and network layers, including traffic among AI workloads and systems.

• Applying AI-native runtime protection close to the infrastructure to address prompt injection, data leakage, and model manipulation.

• Automating deployment and configuration so protection can scale with large AI infrastructure rollouts.

• Testing the architecture before production, including networking, configuration, and automation.

• Supporting restricted and air-gapped environments where external connectivity may not be available.

• Keeping security from consuming GPU and host resources needed for AI workloads.

Turn Complexity Into Control

A modern data center can involve thousands of policies, changing workloads, compliance requirements, multiple administrators, and infrastructure that cannot simply come offline whenever something needs attention.

Check Point brings those pieces together through unified management designed to make a complex environment easier to run. AI-driven policy management, supported by AI Insights and AI Auditor, analyzes traffic and policy behavior to surface opportunities to tighten Zero Trust access and reduce over-permissive rules. AI-driven health monitoring can flag infrastructure issues earlier. AI- driven compliance monitoring can identify misconfigurations, reduce risk, and simplify audit preparation.

Another thing to consider is that the data center does not operate alone.

Check Point’s Hybrid Mesh Network Security approach connects data center protection with security across cloud, branch, users, applications, APIs, and other enterprise environments. Visibility, threat intelligence, governance, and control can be connected centrally while enforcement remains close to the traffic and workloads being protected.
