2 | CHECK POINT Inside the Modern Branch

The Branch is Busier Than Ever

A typical branch used to be a pretty straightforward thing: people worked there, local traffic went back to headquarters, and the main applications and security controls lived elsewhere. Today though, the modern branch has become an operating environment of its own.

Video calls head straight to the internet while internal applications connect to a data center, employees use SaaS and AI tools, and, thanks to IoT, the building itself may have many devices connected to the internet.

That means security teams have to think about more than the traffic leaving the site because what’s happening inside matters too. As does the reliability of the connections employees depend on, especially when there may be nobody with security expertise physically at the location.

More of the Business Now Happens at the Branch Applications, devices, internet traffic, and AI activity increasingly converge there, often without dedicated security staff onsite.

AI Has Expanded the Branch Attack Surface AI is moving through branch networks faster than organizations can put policies around it. Given how quickly easy-to-use AI tools are saturating the average workday, it’s not uncommon for an employee to share confidential information with a chatbot or for an autonomous agent to gain access to sensitive data. At the same time, AI-powered applications can introduce new risks, including malicious prompts that manipulate an application’s behavior without the user’s knowledge or cause it to expose information.

These interactions are difficult to secure and require more insight than just understanding the network connection itself. Security teams need visibility into the AI services being used, what agents are allowed to do, and where sensitive information is going. Meanwhile, attackers are using AI to accelerate phishing, malware development, and exploitation of vulnerabilities. Organizations need prevention that can stop these threats before they spread, not just detect them after the fact.

Connected Devices Create Exposure Too The network within your branch also supports equipment beyond employee laptops and phones. Printers, building systems, and specialized operational devices may all be connected, sometimes without the same security controls as conventional endpoints. An unsecured device can give an attacker another opening. Through segmentation, that risk can be limited by controlling how systems can communicate.

4 | CHECK POINT Inside the Modern Branch

Keep the Branch Running At any branch, connectivity problems can turn into business problems pretty quickly. A poor network path might mean a choppy video call, slow cloud- based application performance, or even an interrupted customer transaction. And different applications have different performance and security requirements. Video calls, for example, need a connection with minimal delay, while sensitive internal applications may require a secure route back to the data center.

A Software-Defined Wide Area Network (SD-WAN) gives organizations more control over those decisions by watching available connections and steering traffic according to application needs as well as current network conditions. SD-WAN enables a branch to use broadband, MPLS, 5G, or other connections from multiple providers to ensure consistency and meet need.

Resilience at the branch goes beyond WAN, though. The security infrastructure protecting the site has to stay available too. Firewall clustering and hardware redundancy can help maintain protection if equipment fails.

Managing the Branch Without Being at the Branch One branch is manageable, but rarely the reality for enterprises and large organizations. Once you reach dozens or hundreds of sites, every change takes on more weight. Bringing a new location online, updating policies, fixing connection issues… the potential for problems stacks up fast and there isn’t always a specialist on-site to handle everything.

Centralized management takes the task of dealing with most of those issues out of the individual branch by enabling you to bring new sites online remotely, push policy changes across multiple locations at once, and monitor network health from afar. Zero-touch provisioning can simplify deployment even further, extending consistent protection without requiring local security expertise.

A Smarter Way to Connect the Branch Check Point SD-WAN gives branch traffic more flexibility in how it reaches the applications and resources your organization relies on.

It can recognize more than 10,000 applications and use link health, application requirements, and policy to decide where traffic should go. When connections degrade, it can move traffic to another available path with sub-second failover. That means that a video call won’t be competing with a large file transfer, and traffic can take the route that makes the most sense for what the application is actually doing.

Security Alongside the Connection

The traffic that SD-WAN is optimizing also has to be protected.

Check Point AI Network Firewall brings that threat prevention and segmentation into the branch, helping inspect traffic close to the users, devices, and applications generating it. The firewall also provides a control point for employee AI activity. Security teams can discover both approved and shadow AI usage, control access to AI services, and help prevent sensitive information from leaking through prompts.

Meanwhile, built-in IoT and OT security helps protect connected devices, from simple printers to complex industrial systems. Integrations with Armis, Claroty, Nozomi, and Medigate help enforce appropriate segmentation and access policies for each.

Connect the Branch to the Rest of the Enterprise A branch may be the starting point, but it’s rarely the only place employees connect from. As work shifts between office and remote settings, access to private resources, SaaS, and the internet needs to remain protected. As branch traffic touches much more than the WAN, Hybrid Mesh Network Security connects the branch with protection across those environments. This way, SD-WAN keeps traffic moving smoothly at the branch, while security policy, visibility, and threat intelligence remain connected to the broader enterprise.

With centralized management and consistent policy enforcement, organizations can extend the same level of protection across branch,

campus, and perimeter environments without adding operational complexity.
