Welcome to the New Perimeter As global travelers from previous centuries depended on the shifting winds of the open seas, so do modern travelers of the World Wide Web depend on the shifting conditions (latency, jitter and packet loss) of the public internet.

What Does This Mean Exactly? We all use Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to connect from home, and these ISPs are our gateway to the internet. The same applies to the connections we find in offices, coffee shops, airports, and many other locations.

This “last mile” connection between our devices and the ISP is typically reliable and fast thanks to developments such as fiber and 5G, with little service degradation if at all. Once we try to get onto the other side of our ISP and into the open web, however, performance issues begin to crop up.

ISPs are typically regional services that cover a certain city or other defined region. The way our ISP connects us to remote cities and regions is by handing off our traffic to another ISP, and then possibly to another one, and another, and so on until we reach the ISP that connects us to our destination (website, SaaS application, data center, etc.).

ISPs do not provide performance guarantees or SLAs once they send our traffic to the internet. Their service is on a best-effort basis. In practice, this means that with every additional ISP along the way to our destination, our traffic quality degrades and becomes increasingly unreliable and slower, as shown in figure 1.
