University of Kansas Goes Back-To-School with Check Point Internal Security Solution

InterSpect Solves University's Eight Second Network Infection Rate

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. - Oct. 25, 2004 - Check Point® Software Technologies Ltd. (NASDAQ: CHKP), the worldwide leader in securing the Internet, today announced that University of Kansas has successfully deployed Check Point InterSpect™ to proactively block the spread of worms and attacks throughout the internal university network, resolving their eight second network infection rate.

Rich in tradition, the University of Kansas is a completely modern connected institution, with 15 wired residence halls, technology-enhanced classrooms, wireless zones and public computer labs providing one computer for every 20 undergraduates. With their advanced network infrastructure, the University provides 28,000 students one of the best values in higher education, according to ratings by US News & World Reports and Barron's magazine. The University's IT team found the fall, back-to-school time especially challenging when the 3,500 students would return to the residence halls and plug their own laptops into the campus network. Many of the laptops go unprotected for the entire summer - students use them for emailing, chatting, gaming, and music swapping -- and they come back loaded with viruses, worms, and spyware. These threats then spread at astronomical rates to the campus network.

For example, in fall 2003, back-to-school time coincided with the Blaster worm outbreak. Infections spread rapidly through dorms, infecting student computers at a rate of one every eight seconds, and then moving onto the campus network, where it quickly overwhelmed routers and switches causing sluggish performance and timeouts.

"It took three weeks to completely stabilize the situation caused by the Blaster worm. Then the Sasser worm struck in the spring, and the security staff fought the same battle all over again and in both instances, we were in a very reactive mode," said Charles Crawford, IT Security Officer for University of Kansas. "With Check Point InterSpect we had no repeat of last year's chaos. We are out of panic mode and now practicing proactive security measures. We are confident that with InterSpect in place, our network is secure and that provides us with peace of mind."

Check Point InterSpect Makes the Grade
The University of Kansas evaluated IPS and IDS products and found them to be inferior because of their passive nature. Additionally, these devices also called for University of Kansas to place each dorm on a separate network, thereby increasing network complexity and costs with the need for separate units at each dorm.

To resolve their security issues, the University of Kansas turned to Check Point InterSpect and realized the following benefits:

  • Proactive Attack Prevention - Enables University of Kansas to immediately block suspicious traffic and provide proactive defenses against vulnerabilities.
  • Isolation of Problem Systems - Allows administrators to segment the dormitories into separate security zones keep suspicious computers at bay to prevent further contamination until a potential attack is identified and thwarted.
  • Unified Internal and Perimeter Security Management - Provides centralized management of the entire campus network including firewall and VPN gateways from a single, intuitive management console.
  • Reduced Cost and Maximized Resources - Eliminates attacks and costs associated with them, allowing the University's administrators to focus on other IT projects
  • Comprehensive LAN Protocol Protection - Differentiates between legitimate traffic and home-grown applications, while also providing comprehensive support for Microsoft and other LAN protocols extensively used throughout a university environment.

"With InterSpect, the University of Kansas can rest assured that they will not experience another Blaster situation that costs time and money to repair," said Carol Stone, vice president of marketing for Check Point Software Technologies. "Instead they benefit from our intelligent, pre-emptive attack protection that enables them to keep their school network up-and-running 24x7."
