Who is Vulnerable?
IBM Tivoli Storage Manager versions prior to 5.3.4
IBM Tivoli Storage Manager versions prior to 5.2.9
Vulnerability Description
The IBM Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) is a product used for storing backups and archiving data. A buffer overflow vulnerability has been identified in IBM TSM. A remote attacker may exploit this issue to crash the service and execute arbitrary code.
Update/Patch Available
Upgrade to IBM TSM version 5.2.9 or 5.3.4:
http://www-1.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21250261
Vulnerability Details
The vulnerability is due to a boundary error when processing malformed initial sign-on requests with a specially crafted 'language' field. A remote attacker may exploit this flaw to create a denial of service condition via specially crafted sign-on request. Successful exploitation may cause the TSM to crash or allow execution of arbitrary code.

Protection Overview
Invalid requests sent to an IBM Tivoli Storage Manager server during the client login process can create denial of service condition, causing the server to crash. By enabling this protection, SmartDefense will detect and block malformed initial sign-on requests. Depending on the traffic mix, activating this protection may result in performance degradation.

In order for the protection to be activated, update your VPN-1/InterSpect/Connectra product to the latest SmartDefense update. For information on how to update SmartDefense, go to SBP-2006-05, Protection tab and select the version of your choice.

To configure the defense, select your product from the list below and follow the related protection steps.
