Who is Vulnerable?
Vulnerability Description BMP is an image file format used to store bitmap digital images. A remote code execution vulnerability was reported in the way Microsoft Office handles BMP files.The vulnerability is due to a memory corruption error when a malformed BMP file is opened by any ofthe affected Microsoft Office applications.A remote attacker could trigger this flaw by convincing a victim to open a specially crafted BMP file.Successful exploitation of this issue may allow the attacker to take complete control of the affected system.

Protection Overview

This protection will detect and block the transferring of malformed BMP files over HTTP.

In order for the protection to be activated, update your Security Gateway product to the latest IPS update. For information on how to update IPS, go to SBP-2006-05, click on Protection tab and select the version of your choice.

Security Gateway R80 / R77 / R75 / R71 / R70 / R65

  1. In the IPS tab, click Protections and find the Microsoft Office Image Filter BMP Header Buffer Overflow (MS08-044) protection using the Search tool and Edit the protection's settings.
  2. Install policy on all Security Gateways.

This protection's log will contain the following information:
