Who is Vulnerable?
Vulnerability Description Windows Metafile (WMF) is a 16-bit metafile image format optimized for the Windows operating system that can contain both vector information and bitmap information. A remote code execution vulnerability has been discovered in the way GDI+ allocates memory for WMF image files. The vulnerability is due to a buffer overrun when GDI+ fails to properly allocates memory in malformed WMF image files. A remote attacker may trigger this issue by convincing a user to open a specially crafted WMF image file. Successful exploitation of this vulnerability may allow execution of arbitrary code on an affected system.

This protection will detect and block attempts to exploit this vulnerability.

In order for the protection to be activated, update your Security Gateway product to the latest IPS update. For information on how to update IPS, go to SBP-2006-05, click on Protection tab and select the version of your choice.

Security Gateway R80 / R77 / R75 / R71 / R70 / R65

  1. In the IPS tab, click Protections and find the Microsoft Windows GDI+ WMF Parsing Buffer Overflow (MS08-052) protection using the Search tool and Edit the protection's settings.
  2. Install policy on all Security Gateways.
