Who is Vulnerable?
Vulnerability Description Mercury Mail Transport System is an email server suite for the Microsoft Windows platform and Novell NetWare file servers. The product supports various popular mail transfer protocols such as SMTP, POP3 and IMAP. The components of the Mercury Mail product are implemented with individual Dynamic Link Library files on the system. There exists a stack buffer overflow in Mercury Mail Transport System. The vulnerability is due to a boundary error when processing the SMTP AUTH command. Successful exploitation of this vulnerability allows remote attackers to create denial of service condition or execute arbitrary code with the privileges of the affected application. If the attack is not successful in code injection and execution, the target SMTP server process will terminate upon exploitation. Note the service will be restarted automatically. If an attack results in successful code injection and its subsequent execution, the behavior of the target host will depend on the intention of the attacker. Note that any code execution will be within the security context of the affected application.

This protection will detect and block attempts to exploit this vulnerability.

In order for the protection to be activated, update your Security Gateway product to the latest IPS update. For information on how to update IPS, go to SBP-2006-05, click on Protection tab and select the version of your choice.

Security Gateway R80 / R77 / R75

  1. In the IPS tab, click Protections and find the Mercury Mail Transport System SMTP AUTH CRAM-MD5 Buffer Overflow protection using the Search tool and Edit the protection's settings.
  2. Install policy on all Security Gateways.

This protection's log will contain the following information:
